I met Jimmy in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria in 1970. He was a partner in a small but hip jazz club not too far from the beach. His guitar, voice and blues-bop rythum really fascinated me. Since i was on leave from Nigeria after the last year of the civil war and a year following in Port Harcourt. Jimmy’s music took me away from the horrors of war and a return to jazz, soul and blues. We became friends and i was lucky to get to know Jimmy, his wife and young son of 8, Sean Gourley. {An accomplished jazz guitarist himself, with a style his own but with many moves learned from his dad.} Later in 1975, when i moved to Paris, we renewed our friendship. During my first few years there, Jimmy showed me many clubs featuring great jazz many where he was playing, others where he was known and played often. Among my favorite was the “Caveau de la Montagne”.
Gosh, Jimmy, from there to the “Upper Room”. Peace.

My father was a dear friend of Jimmy’s from Chicago and encouraged him to go to Paris after the war. They stayed in touch until my father’s death in 1999. We have most of Jimmy’s CDs. I mentioned his name to a friend, John Beach, who has a jazz show, “Miles Ahead”, in Ithaca, New York, USA at what is sort of the quasi Cornell University radio station. John had never heard of Jimmy Gourley and after listening to our CDs he was very excited. Since then he has acquired CDs of all of Jimmy’s music and collaborations. John will be doing a whole hour dedicated to Jimmy Gourley on WVBR at 4-5PM EST on Sunday January 4, 2009. WVBR has live streaming so one can listen to the show on the internet.
