BATTLE JAZZ GALACTICA serves up full-length jazz tracks with brief French chat between numbers, moving from West Coast polish to post-bop bite and spiritual detours. Conte Candoli opens with “Diane”, then Yusef Lateef bends the rules on “First Gymnopedie”, while Miles Davis, Wynton Kelly, Horace Silver and Alice Coltrane keep the set slyly on edge. Bebop, hard bop, cool jazz and jazz piano all get a proper airing.

Golden light reaches the terraced orchards through pierced stone roofs. Beneath bull frescoes, householders queue for imported bath oils; the blockade has reduced deliveries to three fragrances.

Le Président claims the elevated café’s last shaded table. Greg de Villanova produces a reservation scratched on pottery. The waiter places both their drinks in the sun while examining the shard.

Conte Candoli, a regular model at the western terraces’ casting studios, holds still while an apprentice moulds his profile for a bathhouse fountain. He requests a less economical chin.

Yusef Lateef demonstrates an imported reed vapouriser beneath the market colonnade. He uses foreign scenting apparatus long before the palace declares it fashionable, and charges separately for explanations.

Miles Davis abandoned the palace academy for the lower city’s jewellery trade. Under a frescoed stair, he weighs a sapphire against three figs while his former tutor waits to sell.

Wynton Kelly steadies a wedding party across the courtyard’s floating stepping-stones. His buoyant footwork makes him the most requested escort; he catches an aunt without spilling her cordial.

Ray Bryant kneads blue-maize dough in the communal temple kitchen, using his grandmother’s feast-day recipe. He presses a thumb into each bun to accommodate more date syrup.

Horace Silver and Art Blakey, co-founders of the Messengers, argue over their couriers’ new uniforms. Silver demonstrates that the gold fringe catches in every narrow tunnel turning.

Cannonball Adderley answers to a shortened version of Cannibal, his school nickname. At the gilded market, he reserves six honey melons and asks whether the stallholder intends to eat hers.

Alice Coltrane introduces another word for contemplation at the temple’s floating baths. Worshippers practise it beneath flowering vines while attendants retrieve their abandoned wine cups with long-handled nets.

Stan Getz, known as the Sound for his warm, breathy delivery, whispers offers through a tunnel marriage bureau’s grille. His client asks him to repeat the bit about separate bathrooms.

Abbey Lincoln signs the tunnel lodging book with a name borrowed from Westminster Abbey and Abraham Lincoln. She asks whether the honeymoon discount requires an actual husband.

Hampton Hawes, a leading western-coast mosaicist rooted in the old intricate style, challenges Martial Solal to tile a courtyard alcove. They disagree over whose knees cross the boundary.

João Donato connects three regional cooking traditions in one café breakfast. He folds coastal pancakes around inland beans and orchard cream, then refuses the waiter’s suggestion of separate plates.

Sonny Red brings the motor city’s modern enamelling techniques to the deep workshop. He fires a translucent bull pendant while his customer holds competing earrings against her cheeks.

Bobby Timmons, whose much-copied complaint form made his reputation, dictates a fresh objection to the bathhouse tariff. The clerk asks him to sign one of his own originals.

John Coltrane practises the same chariot turn before breakfast, circling a frescoed cistern until the fruit seller lifts her awning. His husbandry of the corner leaves no room for her delivery cart.

Donald Byrd arranges sugared petals on a wedding pyramid in the deep workshop. He studied proportions with Nadia Boulanger in Paris; the bride wants another tier regardless.

Bud Powell translates Charlie Parker’s elaborate architectural shorthand into floor mosaics. A householder follows the new arrows towards her pantry, carrying olives and testing every instruction aloud.

McCoy Tyner handles the tiller in John Coltrane’s celebrated four-person racing crew. Off duty, he steers their pleasure barge between terraced gardens while the others dispute the picnic anchorage.

Benny Golson writes Betty’s wedding announcement, Joe’s wanted notice and Clifford’s memorial inscription at the same courtyard table. He weights each sheet with a different crystallised fruit.

Remember to descale the kettle.
